RELIGION OF EGYPT

The Egyptian religion was based on polytheism (believed in many gods). They believed that Ra was the god of creation. Each city had a temple for a different god. The priest would go up to the temple and pray to the gods. Each of the gods stood for different things.

When people died, they were mummified and their organs were preserved. They believed death was going to a better place. They believed they had three souls. They body was washed and purified and covered in ibu. The organs were taken out and put in canopic jars. The brain is smashed with a hook and taken out through the nose. They dry out the body. Then they were covered with resin and then wrapped the body. They were buried with amulets to protect them and their gold and sometimes their pets. They were put in a sarcophagus and buried. Egyptians weren’t afraid of death because the god of death, Osiris, was a nice and friendly god.

Most Egyptians were polytheistic. Polytheistic means to believe in many gods. Egyptians never questioned their religion after it was handed down. Egyptians had tales on how the world began. The Egyptians weren’t afraid of death because they believed it was a transition into the underworld where the god Osiris ruled.

One of the most popular creation stories was the Heliopolitan myth, which says that Ra-Atym was the most important god. Most people think Ra willed himself to be here. Ra eventually had children and his children had children, etc. These people became the gods and that is how the Egyptians believe gods were created.
